The Brigance Brigade Foundation hosted its third annual 5.7K Championship Run and 1.57 Mile Family Run/Walk event on Sunday, May 1, 2016 in the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore despite the very rainy conditions of the morning! More than 1,200 runners and their families from the Baltimore area, and across the region, registered for the event which took place in Canton Waterfront Park and raised $200,000 to support people currently battling ALS.
This year’s race, held on May 1, kicked off ALS Awareness Month for the Foundation and marked the official launch of Chanda’s Caregiver Corner, a new program within the Brigance Brigade Foundation. Chanda’s Caregiver Corner was created to provide a platform for ALS caregivers to receive support, share their experiences, and hear from other individuals who are also battling ALS as caregivers.
Andrew Cantor (Baltimore, MD) was the first male to cross the finish line in the 5.7K run for the second year in a row! Female first place finisher Pam Halligan (Bel Air, MD) was not far behind him! Both of the top finishers received their own commemorative Brigance Brigade Foundation 5.7K medal and met with O.J. and Chanda Brigance following the awards ceremony.
After races, festivities continued in the Celebration Village despite the rainy weather! Participants enjoyed music from 98 Rock, snacks provided by Canton-based Towson Hot Bagels and Dangerously Delicious Pies, and a Kids’ Fun Zone featuring face painting, Brigance Brigade-themed corn hole sets designed and donated by Bmore Corny, and a visit from the Baltimore Ravens’ Poe. The awards ceremony featured a brief program during which emcee Keith Mills (WBAL) greeted the crowd and Chanda Brigance shared her thanks for all who supported the event.
“Having this year’s race fall on the first day of ALS Awareness Month was truly special and Chanda and I are so thankful for all those who participated in the race despite the very wet weather!” said O.J. Brigance, Co-Founder of the Brigance Brigade Foundation. “It is so vital to shine a light on the struggle PALS (people living with ALS) and their families deal with day to day and let them know that they are not alone, that we are here for them and want to help; everyone who came out to the 5.7K provided hope and help for people battling ALS and you are all champions in my book!”
Special guests joined O.J. and Chanda Brigance throughout the day to show their support for the Brigance Brigade Foundation and all those affected by ALS. Special guests included: Ravens’ wide receiver Steve Smith and guard/center Ryan Jensen, as well as former Ravens players Mike McCrary and Jarret Johnson!
